After an uncharacteristically bad start, the
Lions found their footing on course to a 61-16 victory over the Kansas Wesleyan
Coyotes last Saturday at Hunter Stadium.
“We sputtered for the
first-to-three series,” Head Coach Patrick Ross said. “Didn’t look like
ourselves.”
In the first quarter, the
Coyotes defense focused on stopping LU’s inside plays. This resulted in LU
junior quarterback John Uribe throwing an interception in the first series, and
in the second drive – on the first play – Uribe tossed another interception,
which was returned for a TD and put the Coyotes on top 6-0.
“We came out and we did not
execute,” Uribe said.
The score was 10-6 Coyotes
after the first quarter.
Before the second quarter began,
the LU offense huddled together and discussed what happened. “Coach just got in
there and got in our ear and said this team is not better than us,” Uribe said.
The combination of the meeting
and the LU coaches figuring out what KWU was doing allowed the Lions to get
back in character.
On their first drive of the
second quarter, Uribe threw a 58-yard strike to senior wide out Andrew Helmick
for a touchdown. The Lions scored five times in that quarter to put the game
out of reach.
Uribe finished the game with
10-16 passing for 153 yards, three touchdowns and just the two early
interceptions. Helmick had four receptions for 108 yards and three touchdowns.
The team ran the ball 48 times for 256 yards. Most of those came in the second
half when the Lions were up 44-9.
Junior running back Denodus
O’Bryant returned to action after missing three games. He took a solid hit on
the first running play and was limited after that. O’Bryant did return an
84-yard kickoff for a touchdown in the first quarter.
“I thought special teams were
outstanding,” Ross said. “Defensively we played very physical.”
LU has won its fifth straight
homecoming game. The program is 18-4 all-time in homecoming games.
The Lions are now 5-2 and will
face Azusa Pacific University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hunter.
